overviewSudan, officially the Republic of the Sudan, sometimes called North Sudan, is a country in North Africa that is often considered to be part of the Middle East as well. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, Eritrea and Ethiopia to the east, South Sudan to the south, the Central African Republic to the southwest, Chad to the west, and Libya to the northwest. The population of Sudan is a combination of indigenous Nilo-Saharan-speaking Africans, and descendants of migrants from the Arabian Peninsula. The Nile divides the country between east and west sides. Sudan is situated in northern Africa, with a 853 km (530 mi) coastline bordering the Red Sea. With an area of 1,886,068 km2 (728,215 sq mi), it is the third largest country on the continent and the sixteenth largest in the world. The terrain is generally flat plains, broken by several mountain ranges; in the west the Deriba Caldera (3,042 m/9,980 ft), located in the Marrah Mountains, is the highest point in Sudan; in the east are the Red Sea Hills. The Blue and White Nile rivers meet in Khartoum to form the River Nile, which flows northwards through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. The Blue Nile's course through Sudan is nearly 800 km (497 mi) long and is joined by the Dinder and Rahad Rivers between Sennar and Khartoum. Our Safaris fly across the Nubian Desert of Sudan with an overnight in Khartoum. Seeing the confluence of the Blue and White Nile in the city of Khartoum is a highlight. We also visit the museums and various archaeological sites and monuments. A two day drive can take us to Meroe where we visit the Nubian pyramids to the north of Khartoum. Safaris through Sudan only take place during our Cape Town To Cairo fly-in Safari or on special request.
